Photosynthetic pigments chromatography

As we have been studying plants, we went to the laboratory to extract the different pigments plants have. We were surprised that they do not only have green chlorophyll as we have always studied, but also orange pigments such as carotenes and yellow pigments such as xanthophyll.

For the experiment we used spinach leaves, we broke them and smashed them with the mortar, and then added some alcohol to it. Then, we filtered it, to obtain a green juice that contains the pigments, because we have broken and destroyed the plant cells with the mortar and the alcohol. Finally, we performed a paper chromatography, by which we were able to separate all the pigments.
